Spinal Stenosis

How Stoetzel Chiropractic Clinic Of Winston-Salem, NC Can Help Your Spinal Stenosis

Anyone who notices that they are experiencing back pain and has not had an injury or a fall should be seen by a medical practitioner to have their condition evaluated. Our chiropractor here at Stoetzel Chiropractic Clinic in Winston Salem, advises that unspecified pain could be the source of a chronic medical condition like spinal stenosis. Stenosis of the spine is caused by the space between the bones in your spinal column narrowing and placing pressure on the nerves that run through the spinal column.

Symptoms and Risk Factors

Spinal stenosis does not always cause pain or discomfort, in the beginning, however, the condition worsens as it progresses. Some of the symptoms associated with spinal stenosis include but are not limited to muscle weakness, numbness, problems with equilibrium and balance, incontinence and even paralysis. Generally, the condition affects persons over the age of 50. It can also affect younger persons who have had degenerative changes. Anyone who has had any type of trauma like being involved in an accident, or a disease process like scoliosis, congenital spinal deformity or any genetic disease that affects muscle and bone development are also at risk for the development of the condition.

How Spinal Stenosis is Diagnosed

There are several ways to confirm a diagnosis of stenosis of the spine. Here in our Clinic, we can diagnose spinal stenosis by x-ray. Our chiropractor does so by reviewing the X-ray and looking for bone spurs that are causing the space in the spinal canal to narrow. Stenosis of the spine can also be confirmed by a CT scan. CT scans offer a more detailed look at the spine as images are taken from numerous angles to give a cross-sectional view of the region in question. MRIs are also used to diagnose spinal stenosis. In addition to giving a radiographic image of the spine, MRIs also detect damage to the ligaments and discs in the spinal column. They can also detect tumors and pinpoint exactly where the pressure is on the nerves in the spine.
